Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n

The study of how literature\u00a0affects and is affected by the environment is one of UCSB’s most innovative and vibrant academic programs.\u00a0This branch of literary criticism focuses on the ways in which texts of all types\u00a0shape and respond to conversations about animal welfare, global warming, humanity’s role in the world and our potential revolutionary futures.<\/p>\n

UC Santa Barbara\u2019s English Department allows undergraduates to explore the intersection of literature and the environment from a multiplicity of\u00a0angles and at any\u00a0levels. Students interested in the subject are welcome to\u00a0take one or more of the many courses offered or attend our varied English Department sponsored events.\u00a0If you decide you want to get more involved with the community, you can declare a Specialization or even earn Honors through our program!<\/p>\n

The Undergraduate Specialization<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get a \u201cgreen\u201d B.A. in English!<\/p>\n

Those invested in the environmental humanities, the future of our planet, climate justice, and exploring the literary history of the natural world might be interested in the Undergraduate Specialization in Literature and the Environment (L&E).<\/p>\n

The requirements of the L&E\u00a0Specialization\u00a0are simple:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Four environmentally-oriented courses from a range of over two-dozen that are regularly offered. (Certain other thematically relevant courses may also satisfy these requirements)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In addition to receiving the regular UCSB diploma at graduation, students completing the Literature and the Environment Specialization\u00a0will be awarded a special certificate at the English Department\u2019s Undergraduate Commencement Reception.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Undergraduate Honors<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Students interested in completing the Undergraduate Specialization in Literature and the Environment with Honors have two options:<\/p>\n

    1) Majors who have completed at least two quarters of the junior year with a minimum GPA of 3.5 (overall and\/or in the major) may apply for admission to the English Department\u2019s Honors Program. Students who satisfy the requirements of the Honors Program by completing English 199 and 196 with an acceptable environmentally-themed thesis will receive Honors in the Literature and the Environment Specialization.<\/p>\n

    2) At the discretion of the Instructor, students may enter into a Literature and the Environment Honors Contract for upper-division courses that meet Specialization requirements. This involves regular meetings with the Instructor as well as supplemental work, such as extra readings, an additional short paper or two, or a slightly longer term paper. \u00a0Students completing Honors Contracts for two or more L&E\u00a0courses to the satisfaction of the Instructor will receive Honors. (Please note that the Literature and the Environment\u00a0Honors Contract is not related to UCSB\u2019s College of Letters & Sciences Honors Contract.)<\/p>\n
